Mary Ebba Carbone

February 25, 2011

Carolyn (Ebba) Carbone, 77, beloved wife of the late Leo A. Carbone, passed away Friday Feb. 25th at Merrimack Valley Hospice House, in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Her death came after after she had managed to live courageously with a reoccurrance of cancer for over 2 and a half years.

Carolyn was born in Haverhill in 1933, daughter of Michael and Maria (Fronterotta) Ebba. She had attended Tilton school and she was a graduate of Haverhill High School, class of 1951 . After graduating, Carolyn trained at McIntosh Business school for secretarial work. She then worked at the Mass Electric Company in the office during the 1950’s, where she formed many dear friendships that she carried throughout her life.

“Faith, Love and Charity”, by these words she abided, and she inspired others by her self-less example in family, church and community. Carolyn grew up at St. Rita’s parish, and then after marrying Leo and moving across town, became a dedicated member of St. James parish in Haverhill. She faithfully served the parish through all phases of her life: as a member of the Sodality, teaching CCD religious education classes, serving as a lector and lay leader, becoming a Eucharistic Minister, and helping to coordinate volunteer efforts in the church community. Ever giving of herself, she was a tireless volunteer and assistant for many other local causes and organizations, including: the Red Cross blood drive, Friends of the Haverhill Public Library in the gift shop, the Haverhill Women’s City Club, and Catholic Daughters of America.

Carolyn loved being outdoors and being near the ocean and waves, and during the summers she often visited the local beaches for walks and family time. In addition, over the years, she and Leo would take her three boys out to Cape Cod and sites around New England for special family trips. She also had taken up golf as a hobby, and had enjoyed playing at Garrison golf course even into her 60’s. Carolyn was also truly at home in the kitchen; in her true Italian spirit, ever able to keep family and friends well-fed, Carolyn was reknowned for her cooking of meals and sweets galore, especially her homemade spinach ravioli.

She is survived by her 3 sons: Michael Leo Carbone of Haverhill, Mass; James Arthur Carbone and his wife Pixie of New York City, with their daughter, Carolyn’s grand-daughter, Georgia Carbone, who brought her great joy; and Christopher Carbone and his wife Katherine of Newport, RI; by her brother Michael Ebba and his wife Cheryl, of Londonderry, NH. In addition, she leaves her nephews Matthew Ebba and Jonathan Ebba and , and two grand-nieces and a nephew. She also has numerous cousins still living in the greater Haverhill area who were very dear to her heart.

Carolyn was grateful for the support of friends and family, and was appreciative of the home health aides and visiting nurses from the Merrimack Valley Home Health VNA and Hospice, who helped support her through her times of health challenge.
